Entering into the summer before my senior year of high school, I had no idea that Northwestern existed. In fact, I had not given much thought to the college process (much to my parents’ chagrin!) I assumed that I would attend a university close to home. It was not until my father mentioned Northwestern on our drive to visit family in Chicago that I started really delving into all of my options.

Immediately I was overwhelmed with all of the different, fantastic schools across the country. However, even within this seemingly endless list of colleges, Northwestern stood out to me. Perhaps it was because of the unique quarter system. Maybe it was its proximity to Chicago – a city I had heard plenty about but had never truly explored outside of family trips. It may also have just been because it was the university my father mentioned on that fateful drive. Whatever the reason, I decided that I needed to visit to see if it was all it was cracked up to be.

My tour was exceptional and I got a great glimpse at what set Northwestern apart for me. I was aware that Northwestern was considered a strong university but I did not realize just how fascinating the students on campus were. My misconception – that a school of this caliber would be too competitive and not catered to develop a student’s individuality – was shattered when I met the Wildcats during my visit. Students here were studying fascinating topics, participating and leading influential student groups, all while consistently showing so much pride in their school. I got the sense from my short time here that Northwestern was a place where driven and passionate students thrived and where the school nurtured and encouraged these interests to flourish. I was sold.

And so, after much thought, I applied to Northwestern under their Early Decision timeline. Around a month and a half later, after completing final exams for my high school, I was ushered upstairs by my mother. Little did I know that that day would be such an important day for my future…

Today, I am incredibly happy with my decision to attend Northwestern. I have found my niche here, developed so many new passions, and feel more prepared than ever to graduate in 3 months. I’m not sure what the “real world” has in store for me, but I am certain that Northwestern and the experiences I have had here will help me succeed in whatever I attempt to do.
